[CALL] BiodivERsA: Supporting the protection of biodiversity and ecosystems across land and sea

For joint research projects on biodiversity (min. 3 partners from 3 different countries)

The European Biodiversity Partnership under Horizon Europe, (officially starting in October 2021 as the successor of Biodiversa) is pleased to announce that it will soon launch its first transnational joint research call on the following topic: Supporting the protection of biodiversity and ecosystems across land and sea.

This call will cover the following three non-exclusive themes:

  • Knowledge for identifying priority conservation areas, establishing effective and resilient ecological networks, enhancing species-based protection, and preserving genetic diversity
  • Multiple benefits and costs of biodiversity and ecosystem protection: synergies and trade-offs
  • Effective management and equitable governance to deliver bold conservation outcome

All environments (i.e. terrestrial, freshwater and marine) will be eligible.

A two-step process will apply, with a mandatory submission of pre-proposals at the first step and submission of full proposals at the second step.

* Launch of the call: Friday 01 October 2021
* Deadline for pre-proposals submission (mandatory): Tuesday 30 November 202215:00 CET (local time in Brussels)
Deadline for full-proposals submission: Thursday 14 April 2022, 15:00 CEST (local time in Brussels)

Proposals (in English only) will have to be submitted electronically. Instructions regarding submission, eligibility and evaluation criteria and other relevant information will be published with the official call announcement.

To be eligible, research consortia will have to include teams from a minimum of 3 countries participating in the call (including a minimum of two from EU Member States or EU Associated Countries).

A global budget of over 40 Million euros* has been provisionally reserved for the call and at this stage, the following 34 countries have expressed a preliminary interest in participating in the call:

Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Morocco, Norway, Poland, Portugal (incl. the Azores), Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, The Netherlands, Tunisia and Turkey.

The research proposals will be evaluated against the following criteria:

  • Fit to the scope of the call, novelty of the research and impact at step 1 (pre-proposal stage);
  • (Scientific) Excellence, quality and efficiency of the implementation and impact (including expected policy and/or societal impact and approach to stakeholder engagement) at step 2 (full proposal stage).

For both steps, it is also expected that the international added value of the projects is clearly presented. The detailed list of evaluation criteria to be used for this call will be published at the launch of the call.
