[CALL] Short-term grant abroad (KWA)

For Diploma, doctoral, master or PhD students of UNIVIE who wish to carry out indispensable work abroad.

Requirements

  • Eligibility: students and young researchers of the University of Vienna of all disciplines max. four years after completion of the bachelor's or master's program (the age limit is extended by two years per child)
  • who have been admitted to a diploma/master’s/doctoral or PhD programme
  • the subject of diploma/master’s/doctoral thesis has been approved (or has not been rejected) by the administrative body responsible for study matters (“Studienpräses”) or by the study programme director. 
  • presentation of the doctoral thesis project at the faculty (PhD-Students)

A grant through the KWA program is not possible if you are employed by the uni: docs or the ÖAW-DOCs support program at the University of Vienna, as additional funding for travel expenses is awarded under this employment. There will be no KWA grants for study visits (for example, seminars / lectures / courses) that can be carried out under ERASMUS + mobility.

Duration and amount of grants

Duration:

2 week minimum; 3 months max. (stays abroad can only be applied for periods not exceeding 3 months).
Research stays can be extended at the applicant’s own expense. The applicant is free to make use of any other financial assistance that may be available to him/her.

Tuition waiver: if a grant is awarded, students may be exempted, upon request, from having to pay tuition fees for the semester of their stay.

Limitations:

Applicants with an employment contract who are granted leave of absence on full pay will receive 50 % of the monthly grant if their net monthly salary exceeds € 1.500. The short-term  grant abroad (KWA) cannot be combined with other exchange programmes such as ERASMUS, Non-EU Student Exchange etc. Other grants, if any, must be reported. However, in case of several grants having been awarded (even if they have been awarded by different institutions), the total must not exceed € 1.500 per month. Subsequent reductions are not excluded.

During their stay abroad, recipients of grants are not permitted to pursue any additional salaried work at the location of their research. Recipients of grants are obliged to perform their research work in a regular manner and to be present at the location in question.
