The best "Snapshots of Exploration": Congratulations!

The first place in the "Snapshots of Exploration" photo competition of the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy goes to Niklas Kastius for his picture "Wanderer über den Wolken der Mitternachtssonne"; second to Lorin Helwig for "Vertikale Slums" and third to Clemens Wagner for "Politische (Physio-)Geographie. The two Special Awards "Diversity" go to Peter Haberer for"Drag me through the caves" and Katharina Halbwidl for "Hidden Diversity. In the categories 4 to 10 and 11 to 20, the jury did not rank the winners - the best "snapshots" were too close together. We congratulate and thank all participants for their outstanding submissions!
In the third photo competition of the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy for students 150 photos were submitted - and again the task of the jury was anything but easy with so many outstanding photos.
Nevertheless, the decision on the first places was clear: First place goes to Niklas Kastian for the picture "Wanderer über den Wolken der Mitternachtssonne" - the Geography Master student can thus look forward to 300 euros in prize money. Second place and 200 euros go to Lorin Helwig (bachelor's student in geography) for his picture "Vertikale Slums". The third place, and thus 100 euros, goes to the Teachers' Education student Clemens Wagner for "Politische (Physio-)Geographie". Congratulations!
The Special Awards this years were given for photos relating to "diversity". The two Special Awards endowed with 100 euros go to Peter Haberer (Bachelor Student Earth Sciences) for "Drag me through the caves" and the Doctoral Earth Sciences Student Katharina Halbwidl for "Hidden diversity". Our warmest congratulations!

Platz 1: "Wanderer über den Wolken der Mitternachtssonne"
Niklas Kastius, Masterstudium "Kartographie und Geoinformation"
Aufgenommen während der Mitternachtssonne am Polarkreis auf Senja (Norwegen), zeigt das Bild das Zusammenspiel von Topographie, Wetter und Licht aus der Perspektive einer Drohne. Der Wolkenoberrand der tiefliegenden Stratusdecke verschmilzt mit dem Relief und erzeugt den Eindruck eines fließenden Wolkenwasserfalls. Der kleine Wanderer dient als Maßstab und verdeutlicht Dimension, Höhenwirkung und räumliche Tiefe.
Platz 2: "Vertikale Slums"
Lorin Helwig, Bachelorstudium "Geographie"
Bei einer Tour durch den Dharavi-Slum - den größten Slum Asiens - erklärte uns die einheimische Führerin, dass die Stadt Mumbai die illegalen Bauten abreißt und stattdessen riesige Gebäudekomplexe - sogenannte vertikale Slums - baut, in die die Bevölkerung dann einziehen soll. Die Megastadt kämpft schon seit Jahrzehnten mit Überbevölkerung und Zuwanderung sowie Ansiedelung von Menschen, die im informellen Sektor arbeiten.
Platz 3: "Politische (Physio-)Geographie"
Clemens Wagner, Bachelorstudium "Geographie" sowie "Lehramt Geographie und wirtschaftliche Bildung"
Dieses Bild entstand nicht in den Anden, sondern auf einer mehrtägigen Bergtour an der österreichisch-italienischen Grenze, wo von 1915-1917 einige der grausamsten Schlachten des Ersten Weltkriegs wüteten. Der europäischen Einigung ist es zu verdanken, dass der Grenzkamm nun Almgebiet und darüber hinaus Teil des Karnischen Höhenwegs bzw. Friedenswegs ist. Dieses seelenruhige Lama ist meiner Meinung nach ein schönes Symbolbild für die gelungenen Friedensbestrebungen.
Special Award Diversity: "Drag me through the caves"
Peter Haberer, Bachelorstudium "Erdwissenschaften"
Ein klassischer Ort geologischer Feldarbeit wird zur Bühne für queere Sichtbarkeit. Die Inszenierung einer Drag Queen in einer Höhle bricht mit vertrauten Bildern wissenschaftlicher Praxis und verschiebt die Erwartungen daran, wer in solchen Räumen präsent ist. Indem Drag bewusst in einen geologischen Feldkontext gesetzt wird, verbindet das Bild Fragen von Diversität und Sichtbarkeit mit einem zentralen Arbeitsraum der Geowissenschaften – und erweitert damit die Vorstellung davon, wer dort sichtbar sein darf.

Katharina Halbwidl, Doctoral Programme "Life Sciences"
My thesis revolves around uncovering the plant composition of Late Cretaceous palaeoecosystems. This photo, taken in the highly diverse temperate rainforests of Chile, exemplifies my goal to shed a light on hidden plant diversity in the fossil record.
4th to 10th place
In the 4th to 10th place category, the photos were again so close together that the jury - which, in addition to photographer Joseph Krpelan, Vice Dean Franz Kerschbaum and all of the faculty's student representatives as well as a representative of VISESS - decided not to rank the photos within this category. The 4th to 10th prizes thus go ex aequo to the following students:

Platz 4 bis 10: "A Night of Stars and Practice"
Sepideh Abdollahihashjin, Master Programme “Astronomy”
This photo was taken in Taleghan, Iran, during an observation camp for Astronomy Olympiad practice. The wavy red streak was created by a person walking toward the camera while holding a red light. Tutors and students use red light because its low frequency helps preserve night vision by preventing the pupils from opening too much. The green line visible in the image was made by a laser pointer, which is used to indicate stars in the sky.

Andrea Acevedo Mejia, Doctoral Programme "Earth Sciences"
Digital microscopy of Egyptian Blue, the oldest synthetic pigment recorded in history (ca. 3rd Millennium BCE). This multidisciplinary research focuses on pigment provenance studies to discriminate ancient raw material sources and identify ancient trades and connections over time in the Mediterranean Region. Ancient literature and archaeological research, and mineralogical and geochemical techniques like isotope and trace element analyses, are used altogether to approach the aim of this project.

We are hiking back home after spending a night in a former meteorological station on Svalbard, Norway, 78° north. Three geologists, two meteorologists, on a glacier covered in a thin layer of snow, and all the wonders around us are hidden in clouds and wind. We came to Svalbard to enroll in courses at the local university center, to explore the Arctic, to feel the cold, the snow, and the friendships we found.

Die Grundmoräne des ehemaligen Leiterkees am Großglockner ist heute vollständig freigelegt – der Gletscher existiert nicht mehr. Sichtbar bleiben Sedimente, die Bewegung und Mächtigkeit des einstigen Eises dokumentieren.
Platz 4 bis 10: "Stellarer Wind im Schwan"
Valentin Thierer, Bachelorstudium "Astronomie"
Zu sehen sind die gasreiche Region um Sadr im Sternbild Schwan und der Sichelnebel (NGC 6888), geprägt von einem Wolf-Rayet-Stern. Für mich als Astronomie-Student im 4. Semester ist dieses Motiv besonders spannend, da ich die Aufnahme im Sommer 2025 gemacht habe und mich im Studium bereits mit Sternentwicklung und dem interstellaren Medium beschäftigen durfte. Astrofotografie war ein wichtiger Antrieb meiner Studienwahl. Aufgenommen mit Nikon D750a und 62mm-Refraktor (f=360mm) in L-Sandweiler.

Ailín Benítez Cortés, Doctoral Programme “Geography (Social Sciences)”
My research focuses on communities that are highly exposed to environmental and climate change, where habitability is contested and various forms of human migration take place. [uninhabitable] HOMES shows a house in Caldera (CR), a community highly vulnerable to rising sea levels and flooding. Therefore, local authorities declared it uninhabitable a few years ago. The consequences of this declaration are not straightforward. Rather, local populations continue to navigate complex decision-making processes about their lives in Caldera and their capacity or desire to stay or leave. Caldera remains home to children who play in the garden and grandparents who find healing in the ocean.

Elisa Kainz, Masterstudium "Lehramt Geographie und wirtschaftliche Bildung"
Die Gletscherlagune Jökulsárlón im Süden Islands entstand durch den Rückzug der Gletscherzunge Breiðamerkurjökull, die Eis aus dem Vatnajökull-Eisschild ins Tal transportiert. Die Lagune ist ein eindrucksvolles Beispiel für die dynamische Landschaft Islands auf dem Mittelatlantischen Rücken. Das Foto entstand während einer Rundreise an einem regnerischen Nachmittag und zeigt einen Mann in roter Jacke auf einem Boot vor treibenden Eisbergen.

Indien baut in einem enormen Tempo seine Infrastruktur aus. Überall, wo man hingeht, sieht man Baustellen, die versuchen, mit dem Bevölkerungs- und Wohlstandswachstum mitzukommen. Diese drei Jugendlichen nutzten das unfertige Haus, um eine bessere Sicht auf einen von vielen Auftritten auf dem Kamel-Festival in Bikaner zu bekommen.

Platz 11 bis 20: "Basaltsäulen von Reynisfjara, Island"
Manuel Andreas Staggl, Doctoral Programme "Earth Sciences"
Die Basaltsäulen am schwarzen Sandstrand von Reynisfjara in Südisland entstanden durch surtseyanische Eruptionen. Die Asche verklebte zu Palagonit-Tuff und Erosion legte später das Innere der Lavaschlote frei. Dort bildete langsam abkühlende Lava die oft sechsseitigen Basaltsäulen, wie sie heute unter anderem hier am “Black Beach” zu bestaunen sind. Durch starke Stürme im Februar 2026 kollabierte ein Teil der Säulen und erhebliche Teile des Strandes wurden wegerodiert. Die Säulen sind seitdem unzugänglich und ein Posieren auf den Säulen wie am Bild ist aktuell nicht mehr möglich.

This image captures the dark and pristine night sky and Milky Way over the 2860m high Villarica volcano in Chile. Despite being one of the country’s most active volcanoes, it rests peacefully under its starry blanket, completely dwarfed by the vast expanse above. As an astronomy student studying star formation, I came to Chile to conduct observations, but it also allowed me to enjoy the raw beauty of the very stars I study, in a view that is only granted in the most remote regions of our planet.
Platz 11 bis 20: "Der Schatten des Acatenango bei Sonnenaufgang"
Elena Sperk, Masterstudium "Erdwissenschaften"
Der in Guatemala gelegene Acatenango ist mit 3.976 m der dritthöchste Stratovulkan Mittelamerikas. Das Foto entstand zum Sonnenaufgang am Gipfel. Die Wolken auf Augenhöhe und der lange Schatten des Vulkans sorgen für einen eindrucksvollen und seltenen Anblick.

Lion Golde, Masterstudium "Spatial Data Science and GeoCommunication"
I took these drone images, with support from the Alfred-Wegener Institut and my colleague Tabea Rettelbach, during a field trip to the Siikaneva wetland in Finland for my bachelor thesis. I classified the bog's different microtopologies using drone imagery to enable further research regarding the greenhouse gas emissions of such wetlands.

Stephan Hajek, Masterstudium "Meteorology and Climate Science"
Während meines Erasmus-Aufenthalts in Oslo besuchte ich die Vorlesung „Glaciology”. Im Rahmen einer Exkursion zur Forschungsstation in Finse ermittelten wir die Massenbilanz des Midtdalsbreen, eines Auslassgletschers des Hardangerjøkulen-Plateaugletschers im Südwesten Norwegens. Während der Messungen beobachteten wir einen 22-Grad-Halo, ein optisches Phänomen, das durch Lichtbrechung an Eiskristallen in Cirruswolken entsteht.

Insel der Seligen: ein kleines, unwirkliches Stück Wiese in einer Wüste voll Stein. Aufgenommen im Rondane Nationalpark, Norwegen, bei einer mehrtägigen Wandertour während meines Erasmus+ Studienaufenthalts in Oslo. Ein unverhofftes Stück weicher Boden, um ein Zelt aufzuschlagen, malerischer Sonnenuntergang und unendliche Stille und Weite.

Platz 11 bis 20: "Seitensprung der Buna"
Aurel Drexel, Masterstudium "Lehramt Geographie und wirtschaftliche Bildung" sowie "Geography: Global Change and Sustainability"
Das Foto zeigt den Zusammenfluss von Buna und Neretva südlich von Mostar und dokumentiert ein besonderes hydromorphologisches Phänomen: Die langsam fließende Buna mündet hier nicht klassisch, sondern stürzt über eine mehrere hundert Meter lange Gesteinskante (Travertin) in vielen kleinen Wasserfällen seitlich in die tiefer liegende Neretva. Diese hat sich in einem schmalen Kanal tief in das Karstrelief eingeschnitten. Die Aufnahme illustriert die komplexe Dynamik und Schönheit fluvialer Prozesse.

Als Raumplaner muss man sich immer bewusst sein: auch wenn sich der Mensch Häuser und Städte baut, lebt er eigentlich immer noch in der Natur. Die Stadt ist immer eingebettet in die Natur (landscape urbanism). Der Übergang von Stadt zu Natur verschwimmt im Nebel.

Cornelia Roither, Masterstudium "Physical Geography: Environmental Dynamics and Sustainability"
Aus einer Felsöffnung blickt ein grau-goldenes „Auge“. Darunter zieht sich, wie Tränen, verursacht durch Oxidation dieser Eisensulfidknolle, eine rostrote Spur. Geograph*innen beobachten solche kleinen Details, verknüpfen diese mit den dahinterstehen Prozessen und erklären ihre Auswirkungen. Ihr Blick verbindet Feinheiten im Gelände wie Verwitterung mit hochkomplexen Themen wie Klimawandel, Ressourcen- und Umweltmanagement. Das „weinende Auge“ kann sinnbildlich für diese großen Herausforderungen stehen.
