This paper demonstrates two-dimensional time-dependent finite-difference modelling of Himalayan metamorphism illustrated by the Kullu-S Lahul area (Himachal Pradesh) after the collision between India and Asia and the over-thrusting of the Higher Himalayas over the Lesser Himalayas. A two-dimensional solution demonstrates that during thrust sheet emplacement at geologically realistic strain rates of several centimetres a year, a temperature inversion does not occur. Therefore the variability of two other model parameters were explicitly considerred. 1) There is a significant conductivity contrast between the different types of rocks. 2) Rocks in the Higher Himalayas record a phase of metamorphism that preceded the movements on the Main Central Thrust. This observation emphasizes that there were considerable horizontal temperature variations across the whole region. -from Author
