This paper focuses on the recent regeneration, reuse and creative development of concessional heritage in Chinese cities. Based on the Tianjin case – one of 4 municipalities directly under the central government leadership which hosts 9 former international concessions– this chapter aims at analysing their development as heritage products linked to tourism. We show that the interrelation between heritage and tourism foster creative practices and uses. Based on 4 examples of heritage projects, we argue that the redevelopment of the former concessions in Tianjin is emerging as a laboratory for creative heritage and tourism practices in China. The chapter is grounded in a qualitative research based on the analysis of official documents, web-based promotion materials, in situ observations as well as semi-directed interviews.
