What will the Earth look like in 2050 or 2100? How does our future depend on our choices? And what will the changes do with society?
The interactive theater performance “The Future of the Earth” explores these questions based on different potential futures. It makes climate change experienceable on a walkable stage or via a live stream. Based on real climate data and including various experts, the performance makes the effects of climate change experienceable with different senses: the change in greenhouse gasses can be seen, the melting of glaciers heard, the rise in temperature felt. During four evenings the audience travels into the future along different trajectories and experiences artistic and scientific interpretations of the effects of climate change.
Projections and performance
Lukas Brunner, from the Climate Dynamics and Modelling group at the University of Vienna, has been involved in the project already since last year. He has provided model projections of future climate and served as a scientific advisor. This year he will again be involved in the performance itself as one of the experts interviewed “in the future”.
“What really struck me last year was how hard it is to talk about climate change from a future perspective - without any uncertainty that normally plays an important role in our scientific assessment. But the resulting clear story was what made the experience so real,” Brunner says.

In this second installment of “The Future of the Earth” after summer 2021. Beside the on-site performance near Basel in Switzerland it will this year be possible to also join via livestream. Participation is free of charge.
