Socio-spatial Structures and their Dynamics in Vienna and in the Vienna Metropolitan Regio

Abstrakt

The social and demographic patterns within cities have been an important issue in urban geography for many decades. Studies in this field are aimed at analysing and explaining the structural differences of inner city areas according to their physical and social characteristics. Three questions have been the major focus of research: How is the population distributed within the city proper? What are the 'driving forces' behind this specific distribution? How can this distribution be described more clearly in simplified terms and in model form? This paper follows this tradition and analyses the socio-spatial differences as well as the dynamics of change in Vienna and the surrounding communities, using census data for 1991 and 2001. The analysis illustrates a slowly evolving, more polarised distribution of the population with respect to ethnicity and socio-economic status. Moreover, it is shown that the consequences of Vienna's social housing policy are obviously a feature causing a differentiation unique to this city.
