The biggest landslide event in Brazil: preliminary analysis of Rio Grande do Sul mega disaster in May 2024

Abstrakt

Between April and May 2024, an unprecedented precipitation event reached Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, causing floods and landslide throughout the region. The extreme event impacted 96% of the Rio Grande do Sul municipalities, affected approximately 2.4 million people, and resulted in 182 casualties. In this news article, we report the magnitude of the extreme event, focusing on the landslide inventory preliminary results. The landslide inventory consists of a voluntary initiative, which aimed to assist the local population and public authorities.
