Based on a survey conducted in two neighborhoods in Vienna, this thesis examines to what extent settlement structure, infrastructural factors and their subjective evaluation affects the mobility of residents. The results show that residents of a dense, compact, mixed-use area with easy access to public transport and proximity to the city center cover shorter travel distances and display a larger share of environmentally friendly mobility than inhabitants of a less dense area outside of the core city.
It is also shown that mobility, the result of individual choices, is not only influenced by spatial factors, but also by the residents’ subjective perception of space, social and other factors.
However, the density and mix of jobs, housing, leisure and supply proves to be important for the ecological design of mobility, as people tend to couple their trips for supply and recreation with trips to work. Modal split and average trip length are influenced by the potential of spatial opportunities at the place of residence and the job location, as well as the accessibility of public transport and the quality of pedestrian and bicycle paths.- Organisation(en)
