Joint Inaugural Lectures: Artificial intelligence, sustainable cities and colourful galaxies

On January 11, 2024, the Joint Inaugural Lectures of Krzysztof Janowicz, Kerstin Krellenberg and Glenn van de Ven took place in the Main Ceremonial Hall of the University of Vienna. Rector Sebastian Schütze and Rainer Abart, Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy, welcomed the interested audience. Afterwards the three professors invited for a reception in the Small Ceremonial Hall.
After the welcoming words of Rector Sebastian Schütze and Dean Rainer Abart, Krzysztof Janowicz, Kerstin Krellenberg and Glenn van de Ven provided insights into three fascinating areas of research - from digital geography and urban studies to the formation of galaxies.

Krzysztof Janowicz, Professor of Cartography and Geoinformation Science, held a lecture on the topic: "Why Spatial is Special in Artificial Intelligence Research". © Markus Korenjak
Krzysztof Janowicz’s research focuses on how humans conceptualize the spaces and places around them based on their behavior, focusing particularly on regional and cultural differences with the ultimate goal of assisting machines to better understand the information needs of an increasingly diverse user base. © Markus Korenjak
Kerstin Krellenberg, Professor of Urban Studies, spoke on the topic "Cities worth living in and for – adapt, transform to become resilient and sustainable". © Markus Korenjak © Markus Korenjak
Kerstin Krellenberg’s research focuses on cities, with a special interest in urban sustainability transformations. Global environmental change and the impacts on, as well as the challenges and opportunities for cities, are central to her work. Through inter- and transdisciplinary cooperation, she aims to develop integrative approaches for sustainable urban societies. © Markus Korenjak
In his talk, Glenn van de Ven, porfessor of Theoretical Extragalactic Astrophysics, explained "the colourful past and dark side of galaxies". © Markus Korenjak
Glenn van de Ven’s research focuses on understanding the dynamical structure and evolution of stellar systems, ranging from stellar clusters in our Milky Way to nearby elliptical and spiral galaxies. © Markus Korenjak
