AWARD OF EXCELLENCE 2023

To promote young outstanding academics, the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research created the "Award of Excellence" for outstanding dissertations in 2008, which will be awarded again in 2023.

The best graduates of a doctoral programme of all disciplines at the University of Vienna in the academic year 2022/2023 are to be awarded the Award of Excellence in the amount of €3,000.--. Six nominations are foreseen for doctoral graduates of the University of Vienna.

All nominations have to be made officially via the dean’s office. Self-nominations by candidates can unfortunately not be accepted. Nominations from the FGGA should be submitted via the subunit leadership OR the Doctoral Studies Program Leadership/VISESS Board to dekanat.fgga@univie.ac.at no later than August 22, 2023. If multiple nominations are received, one nomination will be selected within the dean's team using dutiful discretion. The final selection of the proposals is made by the Rectorate with the help of experts, depending on the number of proposals.

Main requirements for a nomination are:

• Austrian or EWR citizenship or equated third-country nationals and stateless persons pursuant to § 4 StudFG
• Graduation in the academic year 2022/23 (Oktober 1st 2022 to September 30th 2023)
• Best assessed final examination (Rigorosum, Defensio)
• Outstanding and best evaluated dissertation
• Candidates who have completed their doctorate sub auspiciis will not be accepted due to double funding

Required submission documents (incl. corresponding evidence):

• Official nomination via the Dean
• Title of dissertation, name of supervisor, abstract of the dissertations
• CV, implicitly incl. date and place of birth, citizenship and current main reporting address (postal address, telephone and e-mail)
• List of publications
• Evaluation reports of the dissertation
• Study sheet (Studienblatt)
• Final certificate of the doctoral studies (Abschlusszeugnis des Doktoratsstudiums)

FGGA:DISSERTATION AWARD

In addition to the Award of Excellence there will be the FGGA:Dissertation Award. Criteria and procedure are identical to the Award of Excellence with the following exceptions: 

• the award is independent of citizenship
• no price money

Up to one award per key research area of the faculty (Anthroposphere, Environment, Earth, Cosmos).
