Abstract

This chapter provides insights on how mobile phone data, more specifically Call Detail Records (CDR), can be used to perform mobility and migration analyses. It is written from the perspective of migration and mobility researchers, and thus should give an accessible exposition of the data science aspects. We start with a very brief introduction to the background of mobility analyses from CDR, and then, using a concrete example (Syrian refugees in Turkey), we provide basic steps and some key challenges that need to be considered when analysing and dealing with such data. As the ethical aspects of this topic are highly relevant, we provide a reflection of the ethics of this concrete case example as well.
