Nanocluster Formation in Electron-Irradiated Li2O Crystals Observed by Elastic Diffuse Neutron Scattering

Abstract

The distortion scattering observed in an electron-irradiated single crystal of Li2O was investigated. A distinct population of nanoclusters of metallic Li was shown to be generated during the scattering process. The clusters were characterized by their size, concentration, shape, defect strength, and the average number of atoms. The relation of the orientation of the Li colloids with respect to the oxide matrix was also studied.
