- Abstract
Single crystal X-ray structural data (T 300 K) are reported for felsobanyite and basaluminite, Al4(SO4)(OH)10.4H2O. The X-ray work confirmed the identity of these two mineral species within limits of error. Structure parameters for felsobanyite are a = 13.026(1) .ANG.; b = 10.015(1) .ANG.; c = 11.115(1) .ANG.; beta = 104.34(1)°: Z = 4; space group P21-C22. 234 Variable parameters were refined to R = 0.101; Rw = 0.092: 1044 X-ray reflections with Fo > 1sigma Fo and sin n/lamda <= 60°. The at. arrangement exhibits a typical sheet structure, in which the individual AlO6 octahedra are combined via common O atom corners and edges to Al8O22 layers. These layers are interconnected by hydrogen bridges to SO4 tetrahedra and water mols., forming the three dimensional arrangement. Basaluminite is a microcryst. variety of felsobanyite.
