Abstract

Polarized FTIR spectra of chrysoberyl (I) and sinhalite (II) show absorption bands in the region of the OH stretching fundamental. Strongly pleochroic bands centered at 3234/3219 and 3135 cm-1 in I and at 3509 and 3474 cm-1 in II are attributed to OH dipoles oriented parallel to [100]. Assuming vacancies on the X-sites (X = Be and B, resp.), it is proposed that O1 is partially replaced by OH groups pointing to the X-vacancy. This may be the predominant incorporation mode for trace H in olivine-type structures.
