- Abstract
Large single crystals of optical quality of Ni Zr bis(nitrilotriacetate)×8.5 hydrate (space group C2221) were grown from aq. solns. Complete elastic, thermoelastic, and piezoelastic tensors were detd. by ultrasonic methods. In addn., the indexes of refraction, the tensor of thermal expansion, dielec. and piezoelec. consts. were studied. Most phys. properties investigated show a strong anisotropy. E.g. the relative dielec. consts. Epsilon_33 and epsilon_11 have values of 335 and 7, resp. The static piezoelec. const. d312 surmounts 750 pC/N (by more than a factor of 300 larger than d111 of alpha-quartz), whereas d123 remains as low as 4 pC/N. Anomalous features are the sharp bend of the temp. dependence of e33 at »287 K, and, above 280 K the increasing attenuation of transversal ultrasonic waves propagating along [100] with displacement vector parallel to [010] and vice versa. These waves are related to the elastic const. c66. The anomalies and the large values of e33 and d312 hint at a higher-order ferroelec. transition.
