Abstract

Crystals of sarcosine sarcosinium nitrate(2 Sar HNO3) have been grown and characterized at 296and 150 K by single crystal XRD and vibrational spectroscopy. The species was found to be triclinic (space groupP11, a ¼ 5.320(1)A° , b ¼ 6.578(1)A° , c ¼ 15.957(2)A° ,a ¼ 95.448(6), b ¼ 95.944(6), g ¼ 93.410(6), V ¼551.6(1)A° 3, and Z ¼ 2 at 296 K), with a dimeric sarcosine sarcosinium cation and a nitrate anion in the asymmetricunit. A very strong hydrogen bond connects the moleculeswithin the dimer. In addition, the tensor of thermalexpansion was determined for the temperature range of 200to 290 K. A strong anisotropy was detected, with thermalexpansion along the c-axis approximately 14 times as strongas along the a-axis.
