Abstract

As part of GTO and commissioning, MATISSE has observed four Carbon stars with different variability and mass loss characteristics: R Scl, R Lep, Y Pav and S Sct. For R Scl imaging results have been published by Drevon et al. (2022) and this contribution presents a comparison with snapshots of the other three targets in terms of spectra, sizes and asymmetry-indicators. Particular emphasis is placed on the C2H2/HCN features in the L-band as these are sensitive to the atmospheric stratification and the formation of dust. We also contrast the results with the predictions of dynamic model atmospheres of the DARWIN type (e.g. Eriksson et al., 2023).
