Abstract

The determination of crystal structure of bismuth oxalate hydrates using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data was analyzed. The solutions of the crystal structures led to a revision of the chemical formula. The correct formula was found with a higher water content. The atomic arrangement in bismuth compound was described as a three-dimensional network of Bi atoms, connected by tetradentate oxalate groups. The monoclinic oxalate showed a pale-brown color and revealed an hour-glass internal structure. All ligands and free water molecules were located in channels and voids. The lone electron pairs on all Bi3+ cations were found stereochemically inactive.
