Abstract

This paper focuses on the atmospheric dynamics that can be investigated with high resolution infrared spectroscopy. I give an overview on more than two decades of observational studies with emphasis on the most recent results from long period variables in globular clusters. The correlation between pulsational amplitude and evolutionary status is discussed. Recent model calculations are briefly described and compared with observational findings. A preliminary study on the influence of non-hydrostatic atmospheres on the determination of abundances is presented.
