Research Networks and Platforms
The University of Vienna has numerous cross-disciplinary structures to promote interdisciplinary collaboration in specific research areas. Researchers from the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy are active in the following research networks, research platforms and inter-institutional research networks.
Research Networks
Environment and Climate Research Hub
Climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental pollution are highly complex global challenges and require integrated and interdisciplinary collaboration. To meet these challenges, the "Environment and Climate Research Hub" bridges faculties and centres, considering disciplinary anchoring and existing high-class track records, to promote excellent research in the field of environment and climate.
Data Science@Uni Vienna
Started in 2018 as a research platform and in the meantime transferred to a research network, “Data Science@Uni Vienna”presents a hub on all activities in data science at the University of Vienna. The primary focus is to bring researchers from different areas together to work on and solve several of the challenges that this new field presents. Scientists from the Faculty of Computer Science, the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy, the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies, the Faculty of Business, Economics and Statistics, and the Faculty of Mathematics are involved.

Research Networks
Research networks build critical mass in interdisciplinary research areas and particularly to strengthen and connect the strategic priorities of the University of Vienna. Research clusters are established by the Rectorate for a limited time and are regularly evaluated.
Research Platforms
The Challenge of Urban Futures: governing the complexities in European cities
New from January 2020 on; Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies, Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science, Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy, Faculty of Computer Science; Head: Yuri Kazepov
Research Platforms
Research platforms bring together researchers from multiple faculties or centers for joint interdisciplinary research and the preparation of third-party funding applications. Research platforms are established by the Rectorate following a call for proposals based on international peer review for a period of four years. After an evaluation, a one-time extension of up to two years is possible.

Interinstitutional Research Networks
Vienna Network for Atmospheric Research (VINAR)
Joint research association between the University of Vienna and Geosphere (Zentralanstalt für Meteorologie und Geodynamik, ZAMG) to promote meteorology, atmospheric and climate research in Vienna. The aim is to optimize the cooperation and the optimal joint use of the data and research infrastructures available at both institutions in order to make Vienna to a leading European research location in meteorology, atmospheric and climate research.

Interinstitutional Research Networks
Interinstitutional research networks promote cooperation with other universities and research institutions. The funding of interinstitutional networks should ideally be equally shared between the participating institutions. Interinstitutional research networks are established by the Rectorate in collaboration with the other participating partner organizations for a limited time and are regularly jointly evaluated.
