The best "Snapshots of Exploration": Congratulations!

Place 1 to 3 - Congratulations to Klaus Karner, Maximilian Ihlenburg and Julian Portenkirchner!
The first place in the "Snapshots of Exploration" photo competition of the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy went to Klaus Karner for his picture "Green Underworld"; second to Maximilian Ihlenburg for "The First Trace" and third to Julian Portenkirchner for "Michel Lévy 2.0". The two Special Awards Planetary Health went to Nicole Keller and Kajetan Moro. In the categories 4 to 10 and 11 to 20, the jury did not rank the winners - the best "snapshots" were too close together. We congratulate and thank all participants for their outstanding submissions!
Also in the second photo competition of the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy for students more than hundred photos were submitted - and again the task of the jury was anything but easy with so many outstanding photos.
Nevertheless, the decision on the first three places was clear: First place goes to Klaus Karner for the picture "Green Underworld" - the astronomy bachelor student can thus look forward to 300 euros in prize money. Second place and 200 euros go to Maximilian Ihlenburg (master's student in geography) for his picture "Die erste Spur" ("The first trace"). And third place, and thus 100 euros, goes to Julian Portenkirchner for "Michel Lévy 2.0" - he is studying Earth Sciences in his master's program. Congratulations!

1. Platz: "Grüne Unterwelt"
Klaus Karner, Bachelorstudium Astronomie
Das Azoren Archipel bietet viele wunderschöne und unberührte Orte. Einer davon ist der Vulkanschlot Algar do Carvão, der sich über 90 Meter in die Tiefe erstreckt. Eine Begehung lohnt sich auf jeden Fall, da man einen eindrucksvollen Blick auf das Mundloch des Schlotes bekommt. Man bemerkt dort unten, wie wichtig die Sonne für das Leben ist: An jedem Punkt, den die Sonnenstrahlen erreichen, ist es grün und es wachsen Pflanzen. An den Orten, wo kein Licht hinfällt, ist nur kalter und dunkler Stein vorhanden.
2. Platz: "Die erste Spur"
Maximilian Ihlenburg, Masterstudium Geography: Global Change and Sustainability
Die Abschlusstour der Hochgebirgsexkursion führte uns im Pulverschnee auf den Gipfel. Eine Woche hatten wir geübt, uns in der Gebirgslandschaft anhand von Gipfeln und Geländeformen zu orientieren. Im Winter sind diese besonders gut sichtbar, da ablenkende Geländeeigenschaften unter dem Schnee verschwinden. Der Vergleich zwischen Karte und Wirklichkeit, vor allem die präzise Standortbestimmung ohne GPS, war oft herausfordernd. Trotzdem haben wir den Gipfel bei jeder Tour souverän gefunden.
3. Platz: Michel Lévy 2.0
Julian Portenkirchner, Masterstudium Erdwissenschaften
Mikrofoto (2,5 mm Bildbreite, gekreuzte Polarisatoren) eines Gips-Einkristalls: Um von der Interferenzfarbe eines Minerals auf die Doppelbrechung zu schließen, wird die Michel-Lévy Tafel verwendet. Die Interferenzfarbe hängt sowohl von der optischen Orientierung als auch von der Dicke des Minerals ab. Da es sich hier um einen Einkristall handelt, ist die optische Orientierung konstant und somit ändern sich die Farben in Abhängigkeit der Mineraldicke. Durch das Ausbrechen von Spaltkörpern keilt Gips zum unteren Bildrand hin aus. Die Spaltkörper sind das Produkt kristallographischer Schwächezonen (Spaltbarkeiten).
In addition, two special awards for "Planetary Health" were also granted for the first time this year: Geography master's student Nicole Keller received the prize for her photo "Forest Fires in Argentina"; the second special prize went to Kajetan Moro for his picture "Deadly Rendezvous." The special prize is endowed with 100 euros each. We offer our sincere congratulations!

Im Rahmen des Doppelabschluss-Programms zwischen der Universität Passau und der Universidad del Salvador (Buenos Aires) ergaben sich viele Gelegenheiten, Argentinien näher kennenzulernen. Bei einer Wanderung in der Provinz San Luis wurden die Studierenden der Fachrichtung Kulturwirtschaft Zeuge eines Waldbrandes. Was hier bei Sonnenuntergang wunderschön aussieht, kann im schlimmsten Fall schwerwiegende Folgen haben. In letzter Zeit wurde vor allem der Norden Argentiniens wieder von Hitzewellen und Waldbränden heimgesucht.
Special Award Planetary Health: "Tödliches Rendezvous"
Kajetan Moro, Bachelorstudium Geographie
Diese beiden Spinnen starben in einem alten Kellergemäuer an den Folgen einer Katastrophe im Kleinformat: In einer Wanne, die mit einer tödlichen Mischung aus Wasser, Benzin und Öl gefüllt war, erlagen sie Seite an Seite ihrem Tod. Die Aufnahme, aufgenommen mit einer Handykamera, erinnert an die verheerenden Auswirkungen von menschgemachten Substanzen in den Gewässern unserer Erde.
4th to 10th place and "Special Mentions"
In the 4th to 10th place category, the photos were again so close together that the jury - which, in addition to photographer Joseph Krpelan and Vice Dean Franz Kerschbaum, included all of the faculty's student representatives as well as a representative of VISESS - decided not to rank the photos within this category. The 4th to 10th prizes thus go ex aequo to the following students:
- Lina Rummler (Bachelor's programme Earth Sciences) for her painting "Sampling in the Marg Shale Cave".
- Agnes Pichlmeier (Bachelor's programme Geography) for "Discovering the Depths: A Sailing Snapshot of Exploration".
- Claudia Buchsteiner (Master's programme Cartography and Geoinformation): "The Secrets of the Reed Belt"
- Jannes Baranowsky (Bachelor's programme Geography) for "Pink is the End of Rainbows"
- Odessa Kelebay (Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Urban Studies, 4Cities) for "Layers of City"
- Yaroslav Zechner (Earth Sciences Master's programme): "The Fox"
- Jan-Niklas Janoth (Master's programme Geography) for "In the Dawn"
In addition, Klaus Karner (winner of the first place) as well as Lina Rummler and Claudia Buchsteiner (both on the 4th-10th place) would also have been represented in this category with their respective second submitted photos, which was recognized in terms of a "Special Mention" for the photos "Monumental View", "Not of this world" and "The Hekla".
We congratulate warmly and are pleased to present the "Snapshots" of this category also in a mobile exhibition at the three locations of the faculty. The award winners* will be honored on June 15, 2023 at the event "Talks & BBQ - Meet the Faculty for Exploration" and the photo exhibition will be opened at the NIG.

Platz 4-10: "Probennahme in der Margschieferhöhle"

Dieses Foto entstand im Rahmen der Höhlen- und Karst-Exkursion zum Dachstein im Jahr 2022. Es zeigt einen flachen Gang an einem Ende der Margschieferhöhle. Lukas (links) nimmt Proben für seine Bachelorarbeit. Lukas (rechts) hilft ihm dabei.
Place 4-10: "Discovering the Depths: A Sailing Snapshot of Exploration"

Amidst the calm waters of a lake in Squamish, Canada, a lone sailing boat drifts surrounded by a light haze. The sun casts a white glow on the water, while the distant mountains are shrouded in mist, lending a mystical aura to the scene. As if pulled by an unseen force, the boat seems to venture deeper into the unknown, beckoning the viewer to join in the mystical exploration.
Platz 4-10: "Die Geheimnisse des Schilfgürtels"
Claudia Buchsteiner, Masterstudium Kartographie und Geoinformation
Etwa die Hälfte der Fläche des Neusiedlersees entfällt auf den Schilfgürtel, dessen Erscheinungsbild je nach Wasserstand stark variiert. Mit Hilfe einer Drohne kann diese stetige Veränderung von Schilf, Wasser und Sediment aus der Luft festgehalten werden, ohne mit dem Ökosystem in Berührung zu kommen. Dieses Bild entstand durch stereographische Zusammenführung dutzender Einzelfotos, welche in 100 Meter über Grund aufgenommen wurden. Die im Übergangsbereich von nass zu trocken besonders gut sichtbar gewordenen Spuren lassen die Belebtheit des Schilfgürtels erahnen.
Platz 4-10: Pink ist das Ende der Regenbögen

Das Foto ist im Westen von Australien an einem Pink Lake entstanden. Der Anblick, den dieser See bot, war besonders beeindruckend: Die in dem See vorkommende Alge dunaliella salina, produziert bei Sonnenlicht Beta-Carotin, wodurch eine rosa Färbung entsteht, die markant zur optischen Erscheinung sowie zur Namensgebung des Sees beiträgt. Spektakulär wurde die Szene schließlich durch zwei Regenbögen, die sich kurz nach vorherigem Regen gebildet hatten.
Place 4-10: "Layers of City"

Viewing the city as a palimpsest is a theme of ongoing exploration in the 4CITIES program. History can be preserved, destroyed, revised, and/or rebuilt through the choices that are made in shaping the urban fabric. Here, an old arch located near Kahlenberg mountain can be identified in a 19th century postcard. Using archival materials to remember the city as it once was can reveal forgotten histories. What are we choosing to remember?
Place 4-10: "The Fox"

A photograph of an outcrop from the salt caves of Tuzluca in the northeastern Anatolia (Eastern Turkey). The outcrop represents a sequence of evaporites (sediments formed through evaporation and recrystallisation from an aqueous environment) of the Tuzluca Formation, which was formed approximately 7 million years ago during the Miocene age. This banded sequence of evaporites is composed of halite (salt), gypsum and mudstone, which was later deformed through tectonic activity, dissolution through water, and more recently through mining activity. The dissolution resulted also in the formation of the salt caves, which became a new habitat for a fox family.
Platz 4-10: "Im Morgengrauen"

Der frühe Vogel ... Während meines Forschungsaufenthalts im Norden Ghanas war eine zeitige Abreise zu unserer Forschungscommunity unabdingbar, um den Tag für Interviews und Datenerhebungen zum Thema Habitability und Migration zu nutzen. Allerdings waren wir nicht die einzigen, die den Tag zu früher Stunde begannen: Diese Nationalpark-Ranger in Ausbildung begannen ihr Training bereits um 5 Uhr morgens. Eine fundierte, disziplinierte, und langwierige Ausbildung ist wichtig, um die Integrität lokaler Ökosysteme zu bewahren und auf die schwierigen Herausforderungen in Nationalparks vorbereitet zu sein.
Special Mention: "Monumentaler Blick"

Das wohl bekannteste Bergmassiv der Alpen sind die Drei Zinnen in den Sextner Dolomiten. Das UNESCO-Weltnaturerbe entstand vor etwa 250 Millionen Jahren (Trias) durch Versteinerung von Korallenriffen und ist heute für seine schwierigen Kletterrouten bekannt. Auch historisch hat es seinen Wert, da dort die Front des Gebirgskrieges zwischen Österreich-Ungarn und Italien im Ersten Weltkrieg verlief. Die damals in Stein gemeißelten Stollen sind heute für Wanderer begehbar. Durch eine alte Schießscharte entstand dieses Bild, das die Mächtigkeit der Drei Zinnen zeigen soll.
Platz 4-10: "Not of this world"

Es gibt Orte, die sehen aus, als wären sie nicht von dieser Welt. Der Schilfgürtel des Neusiedler Sees ist so ein Ort. Ein stark sinkender Wasserspiegel lässt die schwimmenden Algenteppiche binnen weniger Wochen auf Grund laufen. Dabei verkleben sich die Algen an den basalen Schilfrohrhalmen (Phragmites australis) und überziehen diese mit einem dichten Netz. Bei der Austrocknung entstehen originelle Strukturen in einem prächtigen Farbenspiel.
Special Mention: "Die Hekla"

Der Blick ist weit, die Farben kontrastreich. Alles wirkt surreal. Noch stärker ist der Wind, der dort oben weht. Oben: auf einem der aktivsten Vulkane Islands, der Hekla. Wir besuchten den Vulkan im Rahmen einer erdwissenschaftlichen Exkursion nach Island im Sommer 2022. Mit unserem Geländebus fuhren wir weit auf den Berg hinauf. Er ist noch zu sehen, ganz klein und weiß in der Mitte des Fotos. Von dort aus gingen wir zu Fuß über Lava und Asche, vorbei an Altschnee bis zu einem kleineren Krater. Das Foto entstand auf dem Weg zurück nach unten.

Place 4-10: "Campfire in Ivalo"

The picture was taken in Ivalo, a city inside the Arctic Circle. The outdoor temperature at the time the photo was taken was about -30 degrees Celsius. The campfire was extremely warm because of the extreme cold outside. Under the situation of Global warming, how far in the future will this cold become a luxury?
Platz 11-20: "Halbe Realität"

Auch wenn sich viele Phänomene mittels Fotographie festhalten lassen, so bleibt das gesamte Bild eines Momentes immer nur in der Realität bewahrt. Bei genau Betrachtung sieht man nicht nur den Skogafoss (Wasserfall), sondern man sieht viele Möwen, welche an der Felswand brühten. Man sieht anthropogene Einschnitte in die Natur mittels Parkplätze und Wegen. Man sieht im Hintergrund das Hochland mit dem restlichen Schnee des letzten Winters. Doch viele Phänomene sieht man eben auch nicht. Man sieht nicht die Graugänse, welche in Schwärmen über einen herziehen. Man sieht nicht den eisigen Wind des Nordatlantiks. Man sieht nicht die tosende Brandung des Nordatlantiks. Und so bleibt ein Foto eben nur das, was es ist: die halbe Realität. (Skogafoss, Island)

With so many layers of influence thrust upon it, Marrakech’s Medina transforms itself between day and night. As polyglot tourists flock to Jemaa El-Fnaa’s evening food stands, locals and shop owners close up and go home. At “Rush Hour” or “Golden Hour,” the city transforms once again at dusk, as natives and visitors alike hear the Medina’s cajoling calls.

This photo captures the serene beauty of sacred cattle in the Bayankhongor Province of Mongolia. The image showcases the deep cultural and spiritual significance of these animals in the local community, highlighting the intimate connection between human and animal well-being. The picture serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the delicate balance between humans, animals, and the environment, which is at the core of the planetary health concept.

Even though we hardly met anyone on our journey through Ladakh, wherever we went we found lots of trash polluting the beautiful landscape. Since there is no proper waste management system in this area, everything that gets left behind by visitors will remain forever. This photograph shows a plastic canister polluting the picturesque lake Tso Moriri. The lake is located at an altitude of 4,522 m in the Himalayan plains.

A mountain in Hvolsvöllur, Iceland, stands tall against the starry night sky, as the northern lights dance in vibrant hues of green and purple above. The photo captures the moment when nature's grandeur and human's adventurous spirit come together in perfect harmony, inviting the viewer to join in the exploration of the unknown.
Platz 11-20: "Spuren durchs Nichts"
Malte Weisner, Masterstudium Geography: Global Change and Sustainability
Eleganz, Stolz und Mut - Diese Werte symbolisiert die Oryxantilope, das Nationaltier von Namibia. Dieses prächtige Exemplar erschien, wie aus dem Nichts, beim Aufstieg der “Big Daddy Dune”, einer 325 Meter hohen Düne in der über 80 Millionen Jahre alten Namib-Wüste. Das im Hintergrund verlaufende Dead Vlei (“Toter Sumpf”) ist eine durch Klimawandel entstandene weiße Tonpfanne, die einen schönen Kontrast zur rötlichen Farbe des Sandes bietet: Entstanden ist sie durch die Austrocknung des Tsauchab-Flusses, wobei zugleich der Wind begann die gewaltigen Dünen anzuhäufen, und so die Pfanne vom Fluss abschnitt. Dem Oryx näher gekommen bin ich übrigens nicht: Mit seinen langen Hörnern ist er nicht zu unterschätzen und kann sich auch gegen große Raubkatzen wie Löwen verteidigen.
Platz 11-20: "Ein Blick durch die Wolken"

Ein Blick vom Keeskogel Nordostgrat auf den Großvenediger, der nur für einen Augenblick durch ein Wolkenfenster zu sehen war. So hoch im Nationalpark Hohe Tauern wird der massive Gletscherschwund durch die Wolken verdeckt und es offenbart sich eine Urlandschaft, die vom Menschen noch nicht zerstört wurde.
Platz 11-20: "Känguru in den Pinnacles"
Lena Kirchknopf, Masterstudium Lehramt Geographie und wirtschaftliche Bildung
Im Rahmen meines Studiums konnte ich ein Semester in Perth, Australien, verbringen. Im westaustralischen Outback findet sich die skurrile Landschaft der Pinnacles Wüste im Nambung Nationalpark. Hier stehen tausende bis zu 5 Meter hohe Kalksteinsäulen, deren Entstehungsgeschichte bis zu 500.000 Jahre zurückgeht. Es gibt unterschiedliche Theorien, wie die Pinnacles durch ein Zusammenspiel von Wanderdünen, Wurzeln in tieferen Kalksteinschichten und Erosion entstanden sind. Besonders in der Dämmerung entdeckt man mit etwas Glück auch mal ein Känguru, das durch die Landschaft hüpft.
