Photo Competition "Snapshots of Exploration" 2023

More than 100 photos were submitted for the second FGGA-student photo competition - again, the jury had to choose between many impressive entries. But now the decision has been made: Congratulations to the three winners: Klaus Karner (Astronomy), Maximilian Ihlenburg (Geography) and Julian Portenkirchner (Earth Sciences)! In addition to the three main prizes, two special awards on the topic of "Planetary Health" were awarded this year. We would like to thank all participants for their participation and look forward to the next round in 2024!

The first place of our photo competition 2023 goes to Klaus Karner, the second to Maximilian Ihlenburg and the third to Julian Portenkirchner; while Nicole Keller and Kajetan Moro receive the two Special Awards "Planetary Health". In the category 4 to 10, the jury did not rank the best snapshots - they were too close together. Congratulations and many thanks to all participants for their outstanding submissions! Thank you for more than 100 "Snapshots of Exploration"!
Great or exhausting excursions, long laboratory or coding days, your first day in the classroom or the most beautiful night sky: In the second FGGA photo competition, again all bachelor's and master's students and - new - also all doctoral students at our Faculty were invited to submit their best "Snapshots of Exploration" until 10 April 2023. More than 100 photos have been submitted and now it's the jury's turn! The winners will be announced in May.
In addition to the three main prices, two special awards on the topic of "Planetary Health" were granted this year for photos referring to planet Earth, sustainability, and/or a healthy future for our planet and it's human beings. Those two photos were selected by the jury among all submissions.
The following prices are given to the winners of the competition:
- 1st price: 300 Euro
- 2nd price: 200 Euro
- 3rd price: 100 Euro
- 4th to 10th: small UNIVIE present and printed posters
- Special Awards "Planetary Health": Two special awards a 100 Euro
Procedure and dates
Submission deadline over!
Each student was allowed to submit a maximum of two photos until 10 April 2023; now it's the jury's turn! The best photos will be honored at the Faculty Talks & BBQ on 15 June, where also the prizes will be awarded.
The competition is organised by the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy - especially the StudyServiceCenter - and the student's representatives for Astronomy, Earth sciences, Geography, Teaching geography and economics, as well as for Meteorology and Geophysics and since 2023 for VISESS.
