Quantifying Rejuvenation Episodes In Nearby Early-type Galaxies

Abstract

Presence of recent star formation in a number of nearby early-type galaxies (ETGs), has been revealed both by morphological distortions,and by spectral "anomalies" such as relatively stronger Hydrogen absorption features. The latter are particularly relevant for the dating of these galaxies because even minor rejuvenation events can significantly alter the derived average age of the stellar populations.In order to quantify the strength and epoch of such rejuvenation episodes we begun a panchromatic study of a sample of nearby ETGs, from the far UV to the mid IR.We present here results from far- and near- ultraviolet imaging obtained with GALEX.We investigate the morphology, luminosity and colors profiles resulting from combined UV and optical data.We discuss the impact of UV data into our understanding of the stellar populations in these galaxies.
