Abstract

On the basis of new measurements of optical constants characterizing dust particles in circumstellar dust shells, the equilibrium temperatures of different dust species in the radiation fields of an Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) star have been calculated. It has been found that iron-free oxides like α-Al2O3 and MgAl2O4 -- which are potential primary condensates in the atmospheres of AGB stars -- remain much cooler than iron-containing oxides due to the large difference in the visual and near-infrared opacities of both kinds of materials.
